AI Sperm Recovery Breakthrough Confirmed in New Clinical Report

Earlier this year, we shared the story of a couple who finally conceived after nearly twenty years of infertility, thanks to an AI guided sperm recovery method. The Lancet has now published the full clinical report, and the details show just how significant this milestone is for families facing severe male factor infertility.
The research team at Columbia University used a technology called STAR, short for Sperm Tracking and Recovery. It combines ultrafast imaging with deep learning to scan millions of frames inside a semen sample and find sperm that cannot be seen through traditional methods.
In the couple’s case, specialists examined the sample manually and found nothing. STAR processed more than two million images in only a few hours and identified seven sperm in total. Two were healthy enough to use. Both led to embryos, and both embryos were transferred. The pregnancy progressed as normal and was confirmed with a healthy fetal heartbeat. INCREDIBLE!

The report adds important scientific context to the story. The STAR system can analyse 1.1 million images per hour and uses a custom deep learning model that checks each candidate across multiple frames for accuracy. All of this happens inside a closed microfluidic chip that keeps the sample sterile and protected. It is a far gentler and more precise approach than the invasive methods many couples have faced in the past.
For families living with azoospermia or extremely low sperm counts, the promise of finding even a small number of viable sperm can mean everything. This study confirms what early reports suggested. AI is uncovering opportunities far beyond what standard embryology can achieve and offering couples a new path to parenthood.
At Pregnancy AI, we believe stories like this show the real value of technology in fertility and pregnancy care and breakthroughs like this align perfectly with our mission. Well done to the researchers who built the STAR system and made this breakthrough possible 🩷
