Fraiya AI Ultrasound Trial Brings New Hope for Pregnancy Screening

A major breakthrough in pregnancy care is on the horizon. Fraiya Ltd, a spinout from King’s College London, has secured a £1.75 million grant from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to test how AI could improve fetal ultrasound screening across the NHS.
The 27-month trial, beginning in November 2025, will involve more than 9,500 pregnant women across NHS Trusts, Guy’s and St Thomas’, Lewisham and Greenwich, Liverpool Women’s, and Royal Devon University Healthcare.
Fraiya’s goal is to make pregnancy scans faster, more accurate, and more consistent for every parent-to-be.
How It Works
The company’s AI system will help sonographers capture and measure ultrasound images automatically, while also connecting them to remote specialists for expert review. This approach could mean fewer missed diagnoses, shorter appointments, and more reassurance for expectant parents.
Congenital abnormalities affect about 2% of pregnancies in the UK. Early and accurate detection can change lives, yet scan quality and interpretation can differ greatly depending on where you live. Fraiya’s project uses AI to reduce those regional gaps, giving clinicians stronger data and parents greater peace of mind.
At Pregnancy AI, we’re inspired by innovations like this because they align perfectly with our mission to use AI as a tool to support parents with smarter, more personalised care.
Real-World Impact
Dr Jacqueline Matthew, co-founder of Fraiya and clinical research fellow at King’s College London, said the work is about more than faster scans. “It’s about giving clinicians and parents clearer information at a pivotal moment,” she explained.
By combining human expertise with AI precision, the project aims to transform how pregnancy screening feels: calmer, faster, and more reassuring.
Why This Matters
The future of pregnancy care is taking shape, one innovation at a time. While Fraiya’s trial is still underway, its potential shows how collaboration between humans and AI could lead to calmer, faster, and more reassuring pregnancy care in the years ahead.
At Pregnancy AI, we’ll be watching this study closely, inspired by how research like this can help move our mission forward 🩷
